R-22 is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that has been used for years as a refrigerant in HVAC systems. In 2010, the EPA began the phaseout of R-22 by banning production, import, and use of this substance in the United States. An exception was made for HVAC equipment that was installed prior to January 1, 2010. After January 1, 2020, the production and import of R-22 will be banned altogether. Owners of systems that use this refrigerant in Titusville, FL will be dependent on dwindling supplies or recycled R-22 until they upgrade their systems.

Why R-22 Is Being Phased Out

R-22 and other HCFCs are classified as Class II ozone-depleting substances. These materials do not cause as much damage to the ozone layer as Class I substances, which were completely phased out between 1994 and 2005. HCFCs and other Class II substances are less hazardous than Class I materials. However, they can still do serious damage to the ozone layer and are expected to be phased out completely by the year 2030.

Increasing Demand for AC Equipment Conversions

A 2017 article published in the ACHR News indicates that as supplies of R-22 continue to dwindle, more homeowners and building managers are electing to convert their existing air conditioning systems to be compatible with replacements like R-407C, which works in much the same way as R-22. Unlike the banned refrigerant, however, R-407C is a hydrofluorocarbon that is considered acceptable in terms of environmental impact.

Keeping Your Cool While Protecting the Environment

Upgrading to a newer AC system can provide real benefits for the environment and for your budget. Frequent AC equipment repairs can add up to significant added costs for Titusville businesses and families. By investing in a new, green-friendly system, you can avoid these costs and can reduce your impact on the local environment.
